NVIDIA was founded in the US in 1993 by electrical engineers Jensen Huang, Chris Malachowsky and Curtis Priem. In a report by SeekingAlpha, Vivek Arya, managing director at Bank of America, noted that semiconductor giants Intel and Nvidia are the companies with the most at risk from new US rules on restricting shipments of chips to China.Īrya said: “Intel (INTC), more so than Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), along with Nvidia (NVDA) and Lam Research, could see a sales impact of between 5% and 10% due to the new rules, which are believed to be aimed at supercomputing.”Īrya however recently reiterated his bullish stance on chip stocks, suggesting a buy rating on Nvidia. Several other cloud-related semiconductor companies also maintain their buy ratings, as chip stocks could benefit from a rise in spending on cloud computing. Nvidia continues to dominate the discrete GPU market, and while AMD is largely in second place they are both highly correlated, as market conditions will have more of an effect on pricing than company-specific characteristics. AMD has lost around 52% from its stock price YTD, while Nvidia ( NVDA) has fallen by about 60%. It's been a calamitous year for chipmakers so far.
